Remarks by Ambassador C. Patricia Alsup on The Gambian Political Impasse

Ambassador Alsup made the following remarks at an American Citizens Town Hall Meeting on January 6, 2017. 

Ladies and gentlemen, it is a great honor for me to welcome you all to our Town Hall meeting for Americans in The Gambia.  Thank you all for being here this morning.   

Today we are on the verge of a great change in The Gambia.  As we all know all too well, there is currently an uncertain political environment in The Gambia.  We know that the uncertainty is making a lot of people uncomfortable, so we thought it would be useful for us to get together to talk about what the U.S. is doing and about what you can do to prepare for potential unrest and to keep yourselves safe. 

On December 1, 2016, incumbent President Yahya Jammeh lost the national election to the opposition candidate, Adama Barrow.  Although he initially conceded, President Jammeh has since publicly rejected the results and filed an appeal of the outcome, including a request for a new election with the Gambian Supreme Court.  In a meeting on December 17 in Abuja, The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided that if President Jammeh does not leave power at the end of his term on January 18, 2017, then ECOWAS will take all necessary actions to enforce the results of the Gambian elections, including a potential military intervention.

President Jammeh has called the ECOWAS decision to implement the December 1 election results illegal and a declaration of war.  He has also shut down three radio stations, and restricted broadcasting of a fourth, and there are widespread reports of politically motivated arrests.  On January 10, 2017, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear President Jammeh’s petition contesting election results, which is a potential flashpoint that could lead to civil unrest.

In Africa, including the Islamic Republic of the Gambia, many families suffer from malnutrition due to lack of good quality fish consumption in their houses.

The problem of malnutrition affects the entire population, but for children under five and pregnant women are especially vulnerable. 

Poor communities are more dependent on the natural resources they find in their surroundings than wealthy people are. The poor, moreover, are especially vulnerable in situations of crisis. 

The fishing sector is important for developing countries in other ways as well; it is a source of income for fish-folk. 

We mainly treat malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea, anaemia, hypertension and pregnancy related complications- and most of them are made worse by malnutrition.

If fishing grounds are to stay rich in the long run, they must not be over exploited to provide food for millions.

Mr. Pape Samb, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN), has been invited as a honorable speaker at the 8th International Technology, Education and Development Conference, INTED 2014 organised by The International Academy of Technology, Education and Development (IATED) will take place in Valencia (Spain) from the 10th to 12th of March, 2014.

Mr.  Samb will present a keynote speech at this honoured event and will be speaking on the topic: Linking Education with Entrepreneurship: Transforming Traditional Schools into Entrepreneurship Innovation-Based Experimental Learning Labs.

The International Academy of Technology, Education and Development (IATED) is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of international education and university cooperation in the field of Technology and Science.

Mr. Samb focused on executive leadership, management, and entrepreneurship training and coaching.

The Africa Travel Association announced today that Ambassador Bisa Williams, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of African Affairs of the US Department of State, and Mark Preston, Northeast Sales Manager of Destination Marketing at Trip Advisor, will headline the travel trade organization’s Seventh Annual U.S.-Africa Tourism Seminar. The stand-alone travel industry event will take place on Friday, February 21, 2014 at the Washington Convention Center, a day prior to the Washington DC Travel & Adventure Show, a two-day consumer expo.

 

Co-hosted once again by the African Union Mission to the USA and with premier sponsor, the Washington Travel & Adventure Show, the event offers tourism industry leaders and professionals from both Africa and the USA the opportunity to network with fellow professionals interested in Africa and to meet the industry’s top decision-makers. It also offers participants the opportunity to learn about Africa’s destinations and their diverse services and products. In 2013, 150 participants attended the event, including representatives from more than twenty African countries.

Two Gambian Girls Follow in Fathers' Foot steps, Bag Science Degrees the Same Day from the Same University

Ngoneh and Musu  

Two Gambian girls were among  4,800 graduates of the 2012  academic year at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, USA. 

The two,  Musukebba Conateh (alias Musu) and her younger sister Fatou Conateh (Ngoneh) are the daughters of  veteran journalist Swaebou Conateh of the News and Report Weekly Magazine, and Mrs Sukai Conateh, both of Dippakunda in Kanifing Municipality.

Each of the girls was awarded the bachelor of science degree at the same  graduation ceremony held in the University’s stadium, which was filled to capacity for the ocassion.

Ngoneh qualified as a Civil engineer at the School of Engineering and Environmental  Studies while Musu specialised as a respiratory therapist nurse from the medical school at  the KU Medical Centre (KUMC) in  Kansas City, Kansas.
