GYIN-Gambia Interim Executive Meets IFAD Country Programme Manager

The Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN)-Gambia planned executive led by Mamadou Edrisa Njie, GYIN Gambia Ambassador had a meeting with the Country Programme Manager, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Moses Abukari on the operational of GYIN-Gambia as well as to introduce the planned executive.

The meeting was held at the Roc Height Lodge in Cape Point, Bakau on 22^nd February, 2012. The meeting aimed at briefing the IFAD Country Programme Manager about the activities and programmes GYIN-Gambia intended to carry out in the country.

Maiden 'NGO Week': Coalition Celebrates Success

The Association of Non- Governmental Organizations in The Gambia  better known as TANGO, a consortium of Non-governmental Organizations in The Gambia, celebrated what they described ‘NGO Week’.

The celebration started with a parade led by the Scouts  from Africell Junction to TANGO headquarters  in  Fajara ‘M’ Section.

The Marchers were NGO workers, members of staff and officials from development partners, government officials, and the private sector executives as well as students and members of the community.

The series of events marking the maiden celebration kicked off on the 11th and ended on 17, 2012, with the theme,“CelebratingNGO Contribution to Gambia’s  Socio- Economic and Political Development”. 

Funded by the European Commission (EC) and the Africa Capacity Building Foundation(ACBF), the NGO Week 2012  served as the maiden national platform for development workers in the country. And according to officials, the celebration “shall be institutionalised” henceforth.

IMF Staff Team's Report on Gambia

The Gambia economy achieved robust growth with low-to-moderate inflation in recent years, despite the global economic crisis. Real GDP growth averaged around 6  percent a year during 2008-10, driven mainly by agriculture.

Tourism and remittances, however, were hit hard by the global crisis. Meanwhile, inflation ranged between 2 and 7 percent (year-on-year), as the Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG) generally maintained a restrained monetary stance. At times, this required extensive mopping up of liquidity generated by central bank financing of fiscal deficits.

Global Unification Partners With 1% for the Planet

Global Unification, The Gambia ( GU) is a new nonprofit partner of 1% for the Planet. 1% for planet is an alliance of over 1,380 member companies in 43 countries that give one percent of their revenues to environmental causes.
Under this partnership, GU is now eligible to receive donations from 1% member companies, placing them among a diverse, global network of environmental organizations.  1% member businesses fuel this non-profit network through their annual contributions, which totaled over $22 million in 2010.  Partnership with 1% greatly expands the potential pool of funding to which GU can look to for support.

YJAG Trains College Press Corps on Basic Journalism

The Gambia College Press Club recently organised a day-long training on “Basic Journalism” for its members at the College campus in Brikama, the regional capital of the West Coast Region.

The training, facilitated by the Young Journalists Association of The Gambia (YJAG), was aimed at introducing the press club members to the fundamentals of journalism to enable them better understand the profession as well become more vibrant information disseminators.

TANGO says ‘Thank You!’

The Board, Management and Staff of TANGO notes with appreciation and gratitude the support and encouragement it has received on the occasion of the maiden NGO Week from 11 – 17 February 2012. The event did not only serve to raise the profile and image of TANGO and its members as well as the wider NGO community, but also engineered closer and stronger partnership and appreciation among NGOs as well as with the Government, development partners, private sector enterprises and communities and individuals. It has been quite an enriching and fulfilling week that has left TANGO in an even stronger status than ever before.

On LEAD Francophone Africa Top Officials’ Visit

Three top officials of Leadership for Environment and Development- LEAD, Francophone Africa, had visited the Gambia recently namely, Mr. Abdou Gueye, Acting Director of LEAD Francophone Africa, Mary Mah, LEAD Africa Communication and networking Officer, Dakar, Senegal, Madam Marie Skraep, project manager LEAD
During their days visit, the LEAD Francophone  Africa officials were hosted by their Gambian counterparts- LEAD Steering Committee.
At a debriefing session held at the Seaview Hotel, Mr. Abdou Gueye, Acting Director of LEAD Francophone Africa thanked his Gambian counterparts for hosting them. He told the session that LEAD Francophone officials which he (Gueye) led were in The Gambia to inform counterparts about their upcoming events-LEAD Africa fellowship programme which includes training of mid-career professionals.

GAMCOTRAP Dedicates Zero Tolerance Day To Jammeh

As the world marked the International Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Day on 6 February, 2012, the Executive Director of the Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices affecting women and children, popularly called GAMCOTRAP, Dr. Isatou Touary, dedicated the day to President Yahya Jammeh.

She reasoned that they at  GAMCOTRAP dedicate the day to the President of the Republic of The Gambia for the very successful advocacy campaigns that have taken place over the years in an enabling environment of debates to enable communities make the right choices, “despite religious misconceptions”.

The international theme was “From Malabo to New York”: Support the Resolution of the UN General Assembly Banning FGM in The World.”

Back home (The Gambia) the theme was dubbed “From Koina to Kartong: Calling for a Law against FGM”.

YJAG ATTENDS MEDIA HUMAN RIGHTS TRAINING

The Young Journalists Association of The Gambia acronym YJAG delegates five members of the association to attend media training organised by The Gambia Red Cross with funding from the European Union Non State Actors project.

Under the theme “ Promoting Human Rights and International Standards in The Gambia” brought together print, electronic, online, journalists associations and networks that focuses their works in the area of human rights both in The Gambia and outside.

UNICEF: Increasing access to life-saving supplies for children helps save US$735 million by 2015

UNICEF said today an innovative campaign to increase the availability and accessibility of life-saving supplies for children would generate savings and cost avoidances of US$735 million for UNICEF, partners and governments between 2011 and 2015.

It said price reductions by industry, special financing from partners and influencing markets allowed every dollar supporting children’s health to go much further than before.
