GYIN Gambia ELIT 2019 Summer Camp to Hold on July 21 in Basse

Churchill’s Town, June 20, 2019 -- The 4^th edition of the National Youth Summer Camp on Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and Information Technology (ELIT) will be held in Basse, Upper River Region (URR) from 21 – 31 July, 2019.

This year’s 10-day youth camp will allow young people to acquire relevant knowledge and skills to start and successfully manage an enterprise or business ventures, the organizer, GYIN Gambia said in a statement on Thursday.

It is to be held under the theme ‘Transforming youth into agents of change in agribusiness ventures’. Sixty (60) participants selected from across the six Agricultural Directorates in The Gambia are to take part in the camp.

Young Female ELIT Alumni Establishes Poultry Farm

An active member of the Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) Gambia Chapter, Ms. Sainabou Ngack has made a household name for herself by being the first female to establish the first-ever Poultry Farm in her native village of Pakau Njogu, North Bank Region.

Being among the “five best selected participants” in GYIN Gambia’s Entrepreneurship Leadership Information & Technology (ELIT) 2018 National Youth Summer Camp with cash prize of D10, 000.00, she ventured into poultry to help her community to have access to poultry meat and at the same time capitalize on the unique opportunity of being the sole poultry producer in the village.

Meet Alagie Karamo Jammeh of Busumbala Village, West Coast Region and the owner of a vegetable garden called Steel Innovation Farmyard.

The 24year old produces’ onions, carrots, cucumbers, lettuces, peppers etc for sale.

Jammeh, whose main objective is providing healthy organic fruits and vegetables to the populace, started his business over six years ago.

Presently, he has some readily harvested onions for the market which he sells locally at a reasonable price.

GYIN Gambia to Hold 3rd Rural Youth Award in Wuli, URR

The Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) Gambia chapter is to hold its 3rd Edition of the Rural Youth Award (RYA) in Wuli West, Upper River Region on 27^th April, 2019.

The award recognises and celebrates the achievements of rural youths in entrepreneurship and agribusiness. This year’s theme is “Discovering rural value chain by putting young people in agricultural value addition.”

The award provides financial support to deserving agribusiness players to not only grow their business, but serves as an encouragement for them and others to stay in agriculture and contribute to increasing food security, and at the same time enjoy the benefits of running their own businesses.

The 2019 award winners are to receive each a cash prize of D35, 000 plus a six-month mentorship.

Nema project training on 80 start-up businesses of women and youth on entrepreneurship

The National Agricultural Land and Water Management Development Project (Nema) the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) financed project gathered 80 start-up businesses of women and youth from the 24^th to 27^th February, 2014 at Rural Farmers’ Agricultural Training Centre at Jenoi in Lower River Region.

The 80 start-up businesses participants are selected after the project embarked on country-wide trekking identifying potential business[s] based on demand from the beneficiaries themselves by filing Nema request forms. With the volume of participants, the training has been split into two groups 40 participants for each training session to be conducted by Concern Universal (CU).

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Mr. Momodou Gassama Nema project director said that the Gambia government has seen IFAD’s intervention and support in the country as ‘timely’ noting that Nema project seeks to build on the achievements of IFAD’s previous projects-LADEP and PIWAMP with an added important component: Agricultural Commercialization; which seeks to graduate subsistence farming to commercialization-producing more that what we eat, to sell for profit.

Gambia: Entrepreneurship training is crucial to fight poverty

Mr. Asheme Cole, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture has emphasized on the importance of entrepreneurship training saying that entrepreneurship training is very crucial if The Gambia as a nation want to fight the ills of poverty, through increase food production along the entire food value chains citing rice and vegetable.

Cole was addressing 60 participants-MDFT’s at the Jenoi Agricultural Training Centre in Lower River Region organised by the National Agricultural Land and Water Management Development Project best known as Nema  and is been conducted by Concern Universal-Gambia who won a bid to implement the training.
