GYIN Gambia to Hold 3rd Rural Youth Award in Wuli, URR

The Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) Gambia chapter is to hold its 3rd Edition of the Rural Youth Award (RYA) in Wuli West, Upper River Region on 27^th April, 2019.

The award recognises and celebrates the achievements of rural youths in entrepreneurship and agribusiness. This year’s theme is “Discovering rural value chain by putting young people in agricultural value addition.”

The award provides financial support to deserving agribusiness players to not only grow their business, but serves as an encouragement for them and others to stay in agriculture and contribute to increasing food security, and at the same time enjoy the benefits of running their own businesses.

The 2019 award winners are to receive each a cash prize of D35, 000 plus a six-month mentorship.

At Poultry for Prosperity launching, officials calls for ‘self-reliant’

The Poultry for Prosperity with the acronym P4P has officially been launched at the Department of Livestock Services in Abuko on the 8^th November, 2016.

The project is jointly funded by the Food and Agriculture Sector Development Project (FASDEP) under the Ministry of Agriculture and SAADIS Group Limited. The project will be implemented by the National Enterprise Development Initiative (NEDI).

FASDEP through its sub-component will provide 60 per cent funding for the establishment of 150 backyard poultry schemes for youth and women under the P4P, while SAADI Group Limited contributes 40 per cent.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Landing B. Sanneh, general manager, NEDI said the project is intended to benefit 1000 young people across the country.

Green Up meets FAO

Officials of Green Up, on Tuesday 18^th October, 2016, held a courtesy call meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at its office in Fajara. 

The consultative meeting was meant to officially inform the FAO Banjul office of Green Up’s objectives and progresses made.

The Green Up is a national youth-led tree planting challenge that seeks to engage young people in planting ten thousand (10,000) trees across the country. The project is implemented by Climate Watch- The Gambia (CWG) and Youth Action for Sustainable Development. 

Speaking at the meeting, the Project Manager of the Green Up, Kemo Fatty, said the initiative is aimed at planting 10,000 trees with young people of the country adding that the initiative also has a component of raising the awareness of people; especially those in rural areas about the realities of climate change and how engaging in tree planting can help boost agricultural productivity. 

Gambia: Deputy agriculture minister says GNAIP should be inclusive

The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) in collaboration with ECOWAP, NEPAD and CAADP Horizon 2025, convey a three days workshop from the 27^th to 29^th September, 2016 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

  

The deputy minister of Agriculture, Mr. Sherriffo Bojang, presided over the official opening on behalf of the minister.

The restitution workshop is to launch the development process of the second generation of the Gambia National Agricultural Investment Plan-GNAIP 2.0 for agricultural transformation in The Gambia. 

GNAIP is the national blueprint for the development of Gambia’s agriculture sector.

Governor urges rural youth to utilise opportunities as CORY Gambia project REVCEL training starts

The governor of the Upper River Region has called on youth of the region to tap the opportunities provided by The Gambia government for personal growth and development.

Governor Omar Ceesay said almost all the entire projects that the government has implemented have youth component which if utilised by the youth would help them to contribute meaningfully towards personal and national development.

He made this remark during the official opening of 12-day training for 27 young people under the Rural Entrepreneurial Venture Creation and Experimental Learning (REVCEL) underway at the regional education conference hall in Basse Mansajang, 

Youths need to be empowered with livelihood skills… says KMYC Chairperson

The Chairperson of the Kanifing Municipal Youth Committee (KMYC), Mr Lamin Marong has said that young people in the Gambia like other young people in most developing countries needs to be informed, trained, and empowered with Live and Livelihood Skills to be able to vanquish problems affecting them in their day-to-day development endeavors.

 

Marong, who was speaking on Sunday, 13 September, 2015 at the opening ceremony of the first ever edition youth camp at St John School for the Deaf.

The youth camp was organised by the municipality, added that in the Gambia, young people consist of about 63.7% of the population and in the nearest future, this is expected to increase.
